The grocery-aisle Zinfandel disclosure test

Same ripe Zinfandel.
One publishes the recipe.
One sells the barrel.

The Federalist publishes a full cellar record: a 93% Zinfandel blend, twelve days on skins and a year in oak. 1000 Stories answers with a bourbon-barrel signature the Federalist can't match, then keeps Batch No. 95's composition and alcohol off the page. Neither wins on evidence alone; the choice is whether the barrel finish or the paperwork is what you're buying.

Neither is the automatic buy. Public reception reads 91–87.

1000 Stories builds its identity on a two-stage method the producer does disclose: Zinfandel aged in traditional wine oak, then finished in used bourbon barrels. What it does not publish is Batch No. 95 itself, its exact composition, alcohol and barrel schedule, because the producer's own archive stops before that batch. The Federalist publishes the opposite balance: a producer-stated 93% Zinfandel and 7% Syrah, separate block fermentations averaging twelve days on skins, twelve months in 25% new oak and 14.9% alcohol, all as a traditional oak Zinfandel with no signature-barrel hook. Shoppers give 1000 Stories the stronger reception, carried by its larger Total Wine pool. Choose 1000 Stories when the bourbon-barrel vanilla and smoke are the assignment and a missing batch sheet doesn't bother you. Choose The Federalist when you want a fully documented Lodi Zinfandel and, near the low end of its range, more published cellar work for the money.

Choose 1000 Stories if
  • You want ripe Zinfandel with vanilla and smoke
  • A bourbon-barrel finish is a feature, not a distraction
  • You value a physically certified batch identity

One rubric. No hand-waving.

Ratings are dated snapshots that can span vintages. Composition and production details come from each producer's current release record; where a producer discloses a method but not a batch's full specification, we say so rather than fill the gap.

Plum, cherry, spice and a long finish

Recorded gap

The producer archive reaches Batch No. 91, not the physical Batch No. 95, so the exact recipe stays unproved

The retailer allergen field is internally ambiguous and is not read as an absence claim

How the two wines separate in the glass.

Both wines are ripe, full-bodied, high-intensity California Zinfandel built for immediate drinking. The separation is what each producer is willing to put on the record: a traditional oak schedule spelled out in full, against a signature barrel finish with the batch sheet withheld.
