The name Instigator says nothing about the grape inside or the ground it grew on. What stands behind it is a family: Oak Ridge Winery places Instigator in its 3 Girls line, made for the fourth generation of the Maggio family. Its regular price was $15.88 in our August 2026 checks.
Under that name is Chardonnay, a grape that can travel a wide range depending on how it is made. Official category guides say Chardonnay left out of oak can keep a lighter shape, while oak and a stretch on the yeast can add toast, spice and a rounder texture; the fruit runs from citrus and apple in cooler examples to stone fruit or tropical fruit in riper ones.
