From the producer

Family schoolhouse winery since 1983

L'Ecole No 41 says it is a third-generation, family-owned winery located in the historic Frenchtown School depicted on its label, founded in 1983 by Jean and Baker Ferguson as the third winery established in the Walla Walla Valley.

Research status

Where this page is headed

We are checking the current release, the producer record, and the bottle itself. Until that work is complete, this page reports only the facts carried by the dated store feed and shared region and grape research.

Region guideColumbia Valley

A little background helps this bottle make sense.

Getting to know Columbia Valley.

Columbia Valley is large, dry and internally varied. Its rain-shadow climate and cool nights are useful context, but a statewide-scale AVA never replaces vineyard or subappellation sourcing.

The place

What the name means

A federally recognized American Viticultural Area established in 1984. It covers most of Washington’s wine-growing land and crosses into Oregon.

Weather

How grapes grow here

The Cascade rain shadow keeps annual precipitation near 6–8 inches across much of the valley. Long summer days and cool nights support ripeness while preserving acidity; irrigation is fundamental.

Soil

What lies under the vines

Windblown loess, flood deposits, gravel and basalt-derived material recur across the valley. The broad AVA does not establish one soil for a finished blend.

How large the region is

Area
About 11 million acres, with more than 60,000 acres planted to wine grapes in the authority record.
Riesling context
Riesling was Washington’s second-largest 2023 variety at 24,357 tons, 15% of the crop.

Places within the region

Nested places
Yakima Valley, Walla Walla Valley, Horse Heaven Hills and other AVAs sit within the larger Columbia Valley framework.
Resolution limit
A Columbia Valley label does not establish a single vineyard, elevation or soil series.
Grape guideSyrah

The grape name gives context. It is not a review of this bottle.

Getting to know Syrah.

Syrah is a red grape also called Shiraz on many labels. It can make a varietal wine or join blends, and the chosen name sometimes signals the producer's intended style.

Category guide

What to expect in the glass

Regional guides describe dark berry, plum, pepper and savory notes, with medium to full body and firm structure. Cooler growing conditions can emphasize pepper and freshness, while warmer sites can bring riper fruit and more weight.
