Research status

Where this page is headed

We are checking the current release, the producer record, and the bottle itself. Until that work is complete, this page reports only the facts carried by the dated store feed and shared region and grape research.

Region guidePort

A little background helps this bottle make sense.

Getting to know Port.

The Port name establishes a regulated origin and production framework, but it still covers several subregions, sweetness levels, colors and aging categories. The complete label is needed for those details.

The place

What the name means

Port is a protected Portuguese designation for fortified wine produced in the Douro Demarcated Region. A bottle using Port as a generic style name outside Portugal does not qualify for this record.

Weather

How grapes grow here

Mountains shelter the Douro from humid Atlantic winds. Winters can be cold and summers hot and dry, while rainfall generally falls as the region moves east toward Spain.

Soil

What lies under the vines

Much of the demarcated region has broken schist mixed with clay, with granite around some edges. Vineyard soils are often stony and low in organic matter.

How large the region is

Demarcated area
The Douro Demarcated Region covers about 250,000 hectares, with 43,808 hectares reported under vines.
Port vineyard authorization
The institute reports that about 26,000 vineyard hectares are authorized for Port production.

Places within the region

Baixo Corgo
The western subregion has the greatest share of its land under vines and generally receives more rain than the eastern Douro.
Cima Corgo and Douro Superior
The central and eastern subregions become progressively drier, with Douro Superior reaching the Spanish border.
