What we make of this bottle
Mount Etna is a volcano in Sicily, and the wines that carry its name come from the mountain's slopes. Our region research notes that the growing area wraps around the cone, so slope, elevation, and which way a vineyard faces all shift from one plot to the next, with the higher sites swinging between warm days and cold nights. Etna is a protected designation, recognized in 1968, covering parts of 21 towns around the mountain, and in the two stores we checked in September 2026 the lowest price we saw was $42.99 and the highest $46.49.
The producer's record places its founding in Castiglione di Sicilia. Benanti says Giuseppe Benanti established the winery in 1988 at Castiglione di Sicilia, one of the towns on Mount Etna. This is an Etna Bianco, and the name lists Carricante. By Benanti's own account, the winery's start was there, on the mountain, in 1988.

How grapes grow here
Etna has a distinct mountain microclimate within Sicily. Elevation and exposure create substantial local differences, including large temperature changes between day and night in higher vineyards.
What lies under the vines
The vineyards grow in volcanic ground shaped by lava and ash from different eruptions. Soil age and depth vary by site, so Etna should not be reduced to one uniform volcanic profile.
