What we make of this bottle
What does the name Etna actually confirm about where a wine's grapes grew? Etna DOC is a protected Sicilian designation, recognized in 1968. Its production area covers parts of twenty-one communes around Mount Etna. That single name still covers a lot of ground. Etna is a volcanic mountain, and slope, elevation and which way a vineyard faces the sun change considerably around the cone. The DOC line does not point to one vineyard or one side of the mountain. Etna's mountain climate is its own thing within Sicily. Elevation and sun exposure drive real local differences there, including big swings between day and night temperatures higher up the slope.
