What we make of this bottle
How much does a wine label narrow things down when the place it names is an entire country? Brancott Estate lists this bottle in its core range as a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, and New Zealand is a long answer: official guides describe wine regions strung along roughly 1,600 kilometres from the warm north to the cool south, with mountains holding rain off several of the big eastern growing areas. Every vineyard in the country, those guides note, lies within 130 kilometres of the sea. The registered regions, Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Central Otago among them, exist to give a more exact address than the country name can. At the low end, our August 2026 checks turned up $13.99 for this bottle.
The grape narrows it further. Our grape research describes Sauvignon Blanc as a white grape known for aroma you notice right away and acidity that keeps the wine fresh, usually made dry. Official regional guides place the category's flavors around gooseberry, citrus and green herbs, and add that cooler sites can push that green, citrusy side harder.
