What we make of this bottle
New Zealand's wine country runs about 1,600 kilometres from its warm north to its cool south. No vineyard there sits more than 130 kilometres from the sea, so ocean air reaches the grapes almost everywhere, and mountains cast dry shadows over several of the growing areas to their east. The country is the origin on this bottle, and it is the smaller regional names, Marlborough among them, that point to one spot.
Cloudy Bay Vineyards says its own story began in 1985, with a first vintage of Sauvignon Blanc made in Marlborough. Though we do not have a shopper rating for this bottle, the grape itself has a well-marked character: official guides describe citrus, green herbs and gooseberry, with riper fruit from warmer sites leaning tropical.
