What does the word Chardonnay actually promise about the wine? Less than a shopper might hope. It is a white grape, and the category guides stress that how it is handled in the cellar shapes the way it tastes.

Official category guides say that made without oak the grape can take a lighter shape, while fermenting and aging in oak can give it more weight. Those guides place citrus and apple at the cooler-grown end and stone fruit or tropical fruit in riper examples, and note that oak and time on the spent yeast can add toast, spice and a rounder texture, though they count those as winemaking choices rather than something every Chardonnay delivers. Butternut's own sell sheet resolves that question for the 2020 vintage: fermentation and aging both ran entirely in stainless steel, with no oak in the process, the lighter-shaped path those guides describe.

The brand's own site says Butternut is made by the Miller Family Wine Company in Santa Maria, California; the parent company states only that the grapes are grown in vineyards throughout California, not a narrower appellation.

Butternut's producer materials disagree depending on the vintage on the label: a sell sheet for the 2020 vintage lists 13.5 percent alcohol and a 90-point score from The Tasting Panel magazine, while the Miller Family Wines product page, describing the 2022 vintage, lists 13 percent alcohol and a 92-point score from the same outlet. Both are current on the producer's own site, ordinary vintage-to-vintage drift rather than an error, but which vintage is actually on shelf now is not something we can confirm. The producer calls Chardonnay its flagship wine, ahead of everything else in the Butternut range.

Our call: a sensible pick if you want an inexpensive Chardonnay in a plain stainless-steel style; it sits among the least expensive whites we track, and the producer confirms no oak touched the 2020 vintage's fermentation or aging. Pass if you want one confirmed vintage and score to point to; the producer's own materials disagree on which vintage's numbers apply, and no shopper rating has reached our record.
