The maker behind this bottle is on record after all: Casal Garcia is a brand of Aveleda, S.A., a Portuguese producer based in Penafiel, and the brand's own product page names Diogo Campilho as winemaker. The producer's technical listing gives 9.5 percent alcohol, a blend of four grapes, Trajadura, Loureiro, Arinto and Fernão Pires, grown on granitic and sandy soils within the Vinho Verde DOC, and the producer's own tasting note calls the wine "young and mellow," lower in alcohol than most table wines. The bottle has outside recognition too: James Suckling scored it 90 points in both 2020 and 2023, and it won gold medals at the 2024 Mundus Vini and Vinordic competitions, figures the producer's own site publishes.

Naming Portugal tells you the country and little else: the official Portuguese wine guide treats it as a country origin rather than a single protected designation, and separates it into regional names such as Vinho Verde, Douro and Dão, with Atlantic influence strong in parts of the north and coast, while inland and southern regions can be warmer and drier. The country alone does not say which of those settings grew the grapes. This one carries the Vinho Verde name; our September 2026 checks found it inexpensive, from $8.99 to $13.99, among the least costly whites we cover.

Our call: buy it as the textbook inexpensive Vinho Verde it documents itself to be, 9.5 percent alcohol, four named grapes and a named winemaker at Aveleda, for a table that wants light and low-proof. Pass if early readings weigh on you; the two shoppers on our record average three out of five, a start that leans low.
