Pinot Noir has thin skins, and the category guides describe Pinot as paler and lower in tannin than Cabernet Sauvignon. Those guides commonly describe red cherry, berry and plum, and they add that site and ripeness can push it from bright and delicate toward darker and fuller.

Castle Rock's own product page lists this wine at 14.5 percent alcohol and describes it as medium-bodied, drawing fruit from what the winery calls “a carefully selected group of California vineyards.” The winery's tasting note calls out aromas of strawberry, dried herbs and allspice, with cherry, cinnamon and “warm sugar” on the palate, the producer's words. Castle Rock credits its winemaking to Director of Winemaking Meghan Daniels Rech and says it works with roughly 40 grape growers, keeping overhead low, in the winery's own account, no owned real estate, marketing department or elaborate tasting rooms, which it says is how it holds the price down without giving up quality.

Our call: worth trying if you want an inexpensive California Pinot Noir and are comfortable leaning on the producer's own account; Castle Rock names the varietal traits plainly, publishes its winemaker and sourcing model, and prices the wine among the least costly reds we track. Pass if you want a shopper rating or a single named vineyard behind the wine; neither has reached our record, and the fruit is drawn from a mix of California vineyards rather than one named site.
