What we make of this bottle
We track this Chardonnay at three stores. Rodney Strong is the name on it, though we have not confirmed a producer history to go with that name. Chardonnay itself is a white grape that turns up in both still and sparkling wine, and wine guides put citrus and apple at the grape's cooler end and stone or tropical fruit in the riper examples. When the wine sees oak, those guides note that oak and a rest on the settled yeast can add toast, spice and a rounder feel, which is a winemaking choice rather than something the grape promises. Chalk Hill Chardonnay pioneer
Rodney Strong Vineyards says Rod Strong planted Chardonnay in the area in 1965, released the first Chardonnay labeled Chalk Hill in 1977, and helped establish Chalk Hill as an AVA in 1983.
