Our take

What we make of this bottle

This is a California Chardonnay, and the winery behind it goes back decades: Clos du Bois says Frank Woods founded it in 1974.

The word buttery sits right in the name, and official guides to Chardonnay explain where that kind of texture can come from: oak aging can add toast and a rounder texture, while the fruit itself leans to citrus and apple when the grapes ripen less and to stone fruit when they ripen further. 3 shoppers have rated it so far.

Their average is a perfect 5 out of five, a high mark from just a few voices. Price sits low for the style, and in our September 2026 checks one store listed it at $10.99.

Another store listed it at $17.99 in those same September 2026 checks. What we do not have is a confirmed sense of where in California these grapes were grown.

Clos du Bois's own page for the 2024 vintage confirms the style the name promises. It calls this a "heavily oaked, richly layered wine" with aromas of spiced pear and vanilla bean, and notes of caramelized pineapple and toasted oak, the producer's words. The producer ties the fruit to unnamed California vineyards it describes as having "dry summers, cool winters and fertile soils," and suggests pairing the wine with brie, shrimp in pineapple salsa or creamy risotto.

Our call: a good bet if a confirmed oak-forward style at a low price is what you want; the producer calls this "heavily oaked" in its own words, and its price sits among the lower-priced whites we track. Pass if you want more than a few voices behind that perfect average; the rating so far comes from just a handful of shoppers, a high mark that has not yet been tested by a bigger crowd.

Research status

What we are still checking

Our overview above draws on the dated store feed, shopper ratings, our region and grape research, and any sourced producer facts. We are still working to confirm the current release, the full producer record, and the bottle itself, and we update this page as we learn more.

Region guideCalifornia

A little background helps this bottle make sense.

Getting to know California.

California on the label is useful provenance but weak detail about place. For these wines, sourcing disclosure, blend construction and house-style consistency carry more decision value than a generic climate paragraph.

The place

What the name means

A state-level appellation, broader than an individual American Viticultural Area. It permits a multi-region blend and does not by itself identify one climate or soil.

Weather

How grapes grow here

The state spans cool maritime zones and hot inland valleys. A California designation alone does not reveal which conditions shaped the fruit.

Soil

What lies under the vines

At state scale, sourcing and house-style construction matter more than any single soil story.

How large the region is

Reusable question
Which counties or AVAs supplied the blend, and did that mix change by release?

Places within the region

Resolution limit
County, AVA and vineyard claims begin only when the release names them.
Grape guideChardonnay

The grape name gives context. It is not a review of this bottle.

Getting to know Chardonnay.

Chardonnay is a white grape used for still and sparkling wine. It can be made without oak for a lighter shape or fermented and aged in oak for more weight.

Category guide

What to expect in the glass

Official category guides place citrus and apple at the cooler end and stone fruit or tropical fruit in riper examples. Oak and time on the spent yeast can add toast, spice and a rounder texture, but those features are winemaking choices rather than a guarantee.
