Across our September 2026 checks, the shelf price on this California Chardonnay swung a long way, from $17.99 at the low end up to $28.99 at the high, the same bottle wearing very different prices from one store to the next. 5 people have rated it. Those scores land at 4.4 out of five.
Chardonnay is made in more than one style. Made without oak it takes a lighter shape, and official category guides put citrus and apple at that cooler end; with oak and slow contact with the yeast, those guides say the wine can take on toast, spice and a rounder texture, which they treat as a winemaking choice rather than a promise. The name points back to the people who built the brand: JaM Cellars says its name comes from founders John and Michele Truchard, second-generation Napa Valley winemakers by the winery's own account.
JaM Cellars' own product page for this California-appellation Butter Chardonnay describes a wine built to be “rich, bold and luscious,” crediting a cold fermentation and a stretch of time in oak for the creamy texture, with stone fruit and baked-lemon notes and a vanilla finish as the producer's own tasting words. The bottle won a Gold Medal at the 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, per the producer's account. JaM Cellars also sells a pricier, single-vineyard Butter Chardonnay from Los Carneros in Napa Valley under the same name; this California-appellation bottling is the standard, wider-distribution version, and the two should not be read as the same wine.
Our call: worth reaching for if a named winemaking couple and a gold medal the producer cites are enough evidence for you; JaM Cellars' own account names its founders and describes a cold-fermented, oak-touched style, and 5 shoppers have backed the bottle with an average of 4.4.
