Mer Soleil's own sell sheet fills out the story behind the price. The Wagner family, already established in Napa, went looking specifically for Chardonnay land and settled on Monterey County, where the producer says cool weather, bright sun and steady wind combine to keep grapes on the vine longer and build a more layered wine. The current release is a 30th-anniversary bottling, made by winemaker Charlie Wagner of Caymus Vineyards, who says of the grape, 'you can really leave your imprint on Chardonnay.' The producer's tasting note describes citrus and honeysuckle on the nose with lemon and baked croissant on the palate, and the sheet cites Chardonnay category sales data, a Top 5 ranking among Chardonnays over $20, sourced to a 52-week retail measure ending in August 2023, three years old now and the only outside sales measure on record for it.

In our September 2026 checks the price ranged from $19.99 to $43.99. Those figures sat far enough apart that, if you are choosing at the shelf, the tag in front is worth reading rather than assuming one set price. Mer Soleil says Chuck Wagner started the winery and his son Charlie now leads it.

Our call: this suits a shopper who wants a documented pedigree behind the bottle: three decades of the Wagner family's own account, a named winemaker, and a Top 5 sales ranking, even if that ranking is now a few years old. Pass if you need a rating or a confirmed oak style before buying; no shopper rating has reached our record, and the producer has not stated whether this bottle went through oak or stayed in steel.
