What we make of this bottle
This is a California Chardonnay, and the date its maker attaches to it is an old one. Frei Brothers Reserve says Andrew Frei established vineyards in Dry Creek Valley in 1890, the winery recounting its own beginnings. That 1890 marks the vineyards, not the wine you would open tonight.
In our September 2026 checks across seven stores we saw it priced between $18.99 and $30.99. We do not have a shopper rating for this bottle.
With no rating, the grape is where to look. Official category guides say Chardonnay can be made without oak for a lighter shape or fermented and aged in oak for more weight. The guides place citrus and apple at the cooler end and stone fruit or tropical fruit in riper examples. They add that oak and time on the spent yeast can bring toast, spice and a rounder texture.
As those same guides put it, that weight is a decision in the cellar, not a promise in the glass.
