Far Niente Chardonnay California White Wine

Chardonnay is the word to work with here, and it pins down less than a shopper might expect. Our grape research calls it a white variety made both still and sparkling, one that can be built light without oak or fermented and aged in oak to carry more weight.

The official category guides we draw on place citrus and apple at the cooler end and stone fruit or tropical fruit in riper examples, and they add that oak and time sitting on the spent yeast can bring in toast, spice and a rounder texture. Their caution is the part worth hearing: those oak and spent yeast touches are choices the winemaker makes, not something the grape or the name assures.

Far Niente credits John Benson as the winery's founder and Gil Nickel with bringing it back. We do not have a shopper rating for this wine; the median across the wines shoppers have rated is 4.71, and this California Chardonnay is not among them. We have seen it priced at $69.99 and $87.49 in our September 2026 checks.

None of that describes how the wine actually tastes, which the grape guides caution the name alone cannot promise. Far Niente dates that restoration to 1979.
