Our grape research calls Chardonnay a white grape made into both still and sparkling wine, one that can stay lighter without oak or take on more weight when it is fermented and aged in oak. Official category guides link citrus and apple to cooler-climate fruit and stone or tropical fruit to riper examples, adding that oak and the wine's rest on its yeast can bring toast, spice and a rounder texture, though those come from winemaking choices and are not a given. Jordan says it has made wine from its Alexander Valley estate in Healdsburg, California since the 1970s, a roughly 1,200 acre property it describes as focused on Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. With no shopper score to set against it, is that history reason enough to pay this price?

Jordan's own vineyard page adds the mechanism behind the valley's reputation: fog moving in through the Petaluma Wind Gap can drop the temperature 35 to 40 degrees from the day's high, stretching the growing season, the producer says, up to a fifth longer than in neighboring regions. The finished Chardonnay, per Jordan, blends roughly a dozen vineyard blocks from five sites on the valley's east side, on vines from three to 35 years old planted with Dijon and UC Davis clones in gravelly soil. Jordan markets the wine as “not a typical California Chardonnay,” built to echo white Burgundy and to cellar for five to eight years; the producer's own tasting-note copy, “juicy citrus, Honeycrisp apple and tangerine” with “subtle French oak notes,” appears worded identically on both the 2022 and 2023 product pages, so it reads as line-wide marketing language rather than a note written for this specific vintage. Jordan's own online shop lists the current 2023 release at $42, a separate, dated figure from our own store price checks.

Our call: Jordan's own account of this Chardonnay is specific and published, and that is reason enough to buy it if the vineyard story is what you want; the fog-cooled site detail, the named vineyard blocks and clones, and the stated years-long cellar life are real, published reasons rather than vague brand talk. Pass if you want a shopper's word on it too; we have no rating on record for this wine, so the whole case still rests on what Jordan itself says.
