Clos du Bois Pinot Noir California Red Wine

Pinot Noir is a red grape with relatively thin skins. Category guides describe it as lighter in color and lower in tannin than Cabernet Sauvignon, and they tend to reach for red cherry, berry and plum. They add that where the vines grow and how ripe the fruit gets can shift the wine from bright and delicate to darker and fuller.

The label has some history behind it: Clos du Bois says Frank Woods founded the winery in 1974. We do not have a shopper rating for this bottle, so there is no score to fold in.

The origin on record is California, and Clos du Bois's own product page answers part of that question. Its tasting notes for the 2024 vintage describe “bright layers of Bing cherry with subtle hints of tart cranberry and spice” finishing long and silky, closer to the bright and delicate end the category guides describe. The producer's viticulture notes point to California vineyards with “dry summers, cool winters and fertile soils” as the source.

Our call: buy it if that producer account, a bright, cherry-and-cranberry style with a silky finish, is the lighter kind of Pinot Noir you already reach for. Pass if you want a shopper rating behind that description; none has reached our record for this bottle, so the producer's account is the only word we have on its character.
