Crowded House Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand White Wine

Marlborough, the region named on this label, is a large cool-climate area rather than a single house style. New Zealand Winegrowers describes warm, bright days that build aroma and flavor, cool nights that help hold the acidity, and low rainfall over free-draining ground. Frost, drought and the weather at harvest still make each vintage its own. If you are choosing among New Zealand whites, that one word in the name tells you the region.

Sauvignon Blanc, the grape, is known for its clear aromatics and lively acidity, and it is usually made as a dry still wine. Official regional guides connect it with gooseberry, tropical fruit and a green, herbal note. Those belong to Sauvignon Blanc in general and are not a tasting note drawn from this bottle.

Crowded House says on its own site that it is produced by Joval Family Wines, part of Joval Wine Group (NZ) Limited.

Crowded House publishes a technical sheet for its current release, and it is specific: the wine is 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc, grown mostly in the Central and Lower Wairau Valley, with a smaller share of fruit from the cooler Southern Valleys and Awatere Valley that the producer says adds minerality and length. The producer describes chilling the juice in stainless steel for a few days, then fermenting it slowly with a yeast chosen to show off the vineyard rather than add its own aroma, and all the fruit is certified through Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand. The finished wine lists 13.5 percent alcohol and 1.7 grams per litre of residual sugar, which in plain terms is a dry wine. That sheet is dated to the newest vintage the producer has released; our record does not confirm which vintage sits on shelf, so treat these specifics as a description of the producer's current wine rather than a promise about any one bottle.

The producer's own trade materials also cite outside recognition for a recent vintage: 90 points from the National Wine Awards of Aotearoa, a silver medal from the Global Sauvignon Blanc Masters, and 92 points from the New Zealand International Wine Show, all from September 2025 competitions. On ownership, the producer's own pages do not agree with each other: one names Joval Family Wines, part of Joval Wine Group (NZ) Limited, as the company behind Crowded House, while a separate trade document calls Catalina Sounds its "boutique parent winery," the producer's own words. Our call: worth a look for a shopper who wants documented winemaking; the producer states the blend as 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc, names its exact vineyard split, and points to competition results in the low 90s for a recent vintage. Pass if you wait for the crowd's word first: no shopper rating has reached our record yet, so the producer's account and outside competition scores are carrying the case alone.
