What we make of this bottle

If you want a dark, full red, Malbec fits the description the regulator gives. Its single regular price on record was $12.88 in our August 2026 checks. Corks & Cheers, which sells the bottle under its Espuela Del Gaucho label, does name a maker: winemaker Johnson Scutt. At this price, does a Malbec earn a spot in the basket tonight?
The brand's own page credits Scutt, a New Zealander who trained across more than a dozen countries and once flew between hemispheres to work two harvests a year, with sourcing the Mendoza fruit behind this Malbec, in service of what his stated philosophy calls “honest varietal expression for the best value.” The product listing describes the wine itself in more detail than the grape guide alone: blueberry and black plum on the nose with a vanilla warmth, blueberry and bramble fruit on the palate, sweet tannins, and what it calls “oak savory notes” running through a long finish.
Our call: reasonable for a shopper satisfied by the brand's account, a named winemaker sourcing Mendoza fruit with a stated aim of honest, value-focused varietal wine, and the flavor detail the listing lays out.
