Antigal Winery Uno Malbec

Malbec started life as a French grape and went on to become the most planted wine grape in Argentina; the wines it makes tend to be deeply colored, with a structure that is firm but easy to approach. Argentina's wine authority names plum, blackberry, cherry and violet among the common references, along with a full body and clear acidity, and notes that vineyard height, weather and cellar choices can make the wine seem fresher, firmer or riper. That describes the grape in general, not this wine in particular.

The producer, Antigal, places its own winery in Mendoza; our September 2026 checks put the shelf price between $14.99 and $19.99. Antigal dates that winery to 1897 and says it was renovated in 2000.

Antigal's own materials add detail to that history: the winery was rebuilt from a bulk producer into a premium one in 2000 by the architecture firm Bormida & Yanzon, launched its flagship wine, called '1,' in 2005, a name the producer says comes from a metal barrel hoop bent into the numeral, and began exporting to the United States in 2007. The producer says this UNO Malbec line earned recognition from Wine Enthusiast magazine in 2011. Beyond this wine, Antigal's own vineyards page names three estate properties across Mendoza, at elevations from about 750 to 1,100 meters, which its agronomist says shape real differences in soil depth and water retention from block to block. The producer's own tasting note for UNO Malbec promises 'delicious plum, strawberry, and blackberry flavors with enticing hints of violets, vanilla, and milk chocolate,' a violet-red wine with a silky texture, the producer's words; alcohol percentage is not published on the page.

Our call: reach for it if a hundred-plus year winery history and Antigal's broader Mendoza vineyard program are enough evidence for you; Antigal traces UNO Malbec's roots to an 1897 winery, a 2000 rebuild, and 2011 recognition from Wine Enthusiast, and separately names three estate vineyards across Mendoza at different elevations. Pass if you want a shopper record or a stated alcohol percentage before you buy; no rating for this wine has reached our record, and the producer does not publish an ABV.
