This bottle is from California, and Hess Persson Estates says the Hess Collection winery began in 1978, when Donald Hess set it up on Mount Veeder. Hess's own tech sheet for the 2025 vintage gives numbers our record lacked: the wine is 92 percent Sauvignon Blanc with a splash of Viognier, harvested September 4 through 10, 2025, fermented cold in stainless steel with no oak, and finished at 14 percent alcohol. The producer's growing season account explains part of the style: a cool summer, with only a few days over 95 degrees, allowed slow, even ripening, which the winemaker credits for the wine's 'nuanced flavors,' the producer's words. The winemaker's own tasting note also calls out 'bright aromas of nectarine and grapefruit, layered with notes of lychee, and a delicate hint of citrus blossom.' The brand itself, Hess Maverick Ranches, is built around sourcing from what Hess calls 'lesser known regions' across California rather than one named vineyard, which is why the label reads simply California instead of a specific appellation.
