What we make of this bottle
Pinot Noir is the word on this label that says the most. Our grape research calls it a thin-skinned red grape, at home in still red wines and among the core grapes of many traditional-method sparkling wines. Category guides for the regions that grow it point to red cherry, berry and plum, lighter in color and lower in tannin than a Cabernet Sauvignon, and they note that site and ripeness can shift it from bright and delicate to darker and fuller. The label's other word is France, the country as a whole rather than any single district: French vines grow near the Atlantic, along the Mediterranean, through the continental interior and into the mountains, and no one growing season covers them all. Narrower French origins carry a protected AOP or IGP name; this label names only the country.
