What we make of this bottle
Begin with the grape, since Pinotage was created in South Africa, crossed in Stellenbosch in 1924 from Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, and Stellenbosch is exactly where this bottle comes from. It is a registered wine district there, though a wide one. The Pinotage Association stays careful on taste, calling Pinotage a broad category that runs from lighter, fruit-led reds to fuller, firmer ones, so the maker counts for more than the grape name alone. Kanonkop says its estate has stayed in one family for four generations and has made wine under its own name since 1973.
We do not have a shopper rating for this wine. The estate's own history is the draw, and its shelf price sat between $29.99 and $38.49 in our September 2026 checks.
Kanonkop's technical sheet for the current 2024 vintage fills in the specifics behind that estate story. The fruit comes off vines seven to forty years old, and the tech sheet lists 14 percent alcohol with 2.45 grams per litre of residual sugar, which in plain terms is a dry wine. The producer's winemaking page notes that Kadette wines get an automated punch-down machine during fermentation, a gentler mechanized version of the hand punch-downs used on Kanonkop's main estate range, and the tech sheet adds the juice spends three days on the skins before the wine finishes twelve months in French oak barrels. The producer's own tasting notes describe a deep purple red wine with cherries, black plums and baking spices, medium bodied with fine tannins and a long finish, the maker's words, and the estate calls the 2024 vintage conditions elegant and age-worthy.
Our call: pick it if a family estate's own paperwork, a technical sheet naming vine age, yield and alcohol alongside a Kadette-specific winemaking note, is enough to hang a Pinotage purchase on; Kanonkop supplies all of it here. Getting to know Stellenbosch.
Stellenbosch lies between mountains and the Atlantic side of the Cape winelands. The district gives useful regional context, but its slopes, valleys and wards differ enough that a producer or ward is still needed for a close reading of place.

Stellenbosch is a registered district in South Africa's Wine of Origin system and sits within the Coastal Region. Named wards inside the district provide a more specific origin when the label supplies one.
How grapes grow here
The district has warm, dry summers and winter rainfall, with ocean air helping cool exposed sites. Elevation and distance from False Bay change that influence across the district.
What lies under the vines
Weathered granite is important on mountain slopes, while shale-derived and alluvial soils occur elsewhere. The district contains many soil forms, so Stellenbosch alone does not identify one vineyard profile.

Pinotage is a red grape created in South Africa by crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsaut, then called Hermitage. Professor Abraham Perold made the cross in Stellenbosch in 1924, and the first wine followed in 1941.
