California is the place this Pinot Noir names, and the trail of place names stops there. The grape carries more information. Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned red grape; it shows up both as a still red and inside many traditional-method sparkling wines, where it is a core grape. In regional category guides the fruit is red cherry, berry and plum, the color lighter and the tannin lower than Cabernet Sauvignon's, and those guides add that site and ripeness can swing it between a bright, delicate wine and a darker, fuller one.
