What we make of this bottle
Abstract is the name Orin Swift gave this California red blend. The producer's technical sheet for the current 2024 release names the grapes directly: Grenache, Petite Sirah and Syrah. We do not have a shopper rating for this wine.
Orin Swift says Dave Phinney founded the company in 1998. The origin is given as California, and the 2024 release lists 15.4 percent alcohol, aged eight months in French oak, 29 percent of it new.
In our September 2026 checks, at the three stores where we found it, the price ranged from $41.99 to $58.49.
Orin Swift's technical sheet also carries the winemaker's tasting notes for the 2024 release, and in the producer's own words the wine leans on blue and dark fruit, naming blueberry, raspberry and cherry among the flavors, with mocha and baking spice on the way to a soft-tannin finish. The winery frames Abstract itself as an entry point into its lineup, calling it, in its own language, a beloved starting point on a journey with us for shoppers new to the brand.
Our call: this suits a shopper who wants a modern California red blend and is comfortable trusting Orin Swift's own account of it; the producer names the grapes, the alcohol level and the oak treatment plainly on its technical sheet.
