Our take

What we make of this bottle

Our grape research describes Chardonnay as a white grape that can come out lighter or fuller. Left out of oak it can keep a leaner shape; fermented and aged in oak it can gain more weight.

Official category guides place citrus and apple with cooler examples and stone or tropical fruit with riper ones, and they add that oak and time on the spent yeast can bring toast, spice and a rounder feel, though those come from choices in the cellar rather than anything the grape guarantees.

Far Niente says Post & Beam joined its family of wine estates in 2020, and its own structured brand facts name Carneros as the growing region for this Chardonnay. The winemaking style, whether the wine saw oak or was kept in stainless steel, is still not something we can confirm. In our September 2026 checks the price sat between $39.99 and $44.99.

Far Niente's own structured brand page fills in more of the account: the Post & Beam label debuted in 2020 with a 2019-vintage Chardonnay alongside a 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carneros is named specifically as the Chardonnay's growing region, while its Cabernet Sauvignon draws from Napa Valley and its newer Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast. Post & Beam is a sub-brand of Far Niente Wine Estates, whose flagship winery in Oakville dates to 1885, and the producer names Michael Accurso as Director of Winemaking across Post & Beam and its sibling labels. Far Niente's marketing copy for the wine is looser than its structured facts, describing the Chardonnay only as “balanced and sophisticated, with vibrant, stone-fruit flavors and a captivating minerality”, without stating whether it saw oak.

Our call: this suits a shopper who trusts a big Napa house's brand story; Far Niente ties the fruit specifically to Carneros and stands behind the label with a parent winery whose history in Oakville goes back to 1885. Pass if oak treatment matters to your choice of Chardonnay; Far Niente confirms the grape and the region but not whether this wine saw oak or stayed in stainless steel, and no shopper rating has reached us to weigh instead.

Getting to know Chardonnay.

Chardonnay is a white grape used for still and sparkling wine. It can be made without oak for a lighter shape or fermented and aged in oak for more weight.

Category guide

What to expect in the glass

Official category guides place citrus and apple at the cooler end and stone fruit or tropical fruit in riper examples. Oak and time on the spent yeast can add toast, spice and a rounder texture, but those features are winemaking choices rather than a guarantee.
