Rombauer Vineyards Chardonnay California White Wine

With this California Chardonnay, price is the first thing to reckon with. In our September 2026 checks it was observed as low as $42.99 and as high as $59.99.

Rombauer Vineyards says Koerner and Joan Rombauer founded the winery in 1980, a date that belongs to the winery's own history rather than to this bottling.

On the wine in the glass, the grape guides set the expectations. They describe Chardonnay as a white that follows the winemaker's lead: light when oak is left out of the picture, weightier when the wine ferments and ages in it. The same guides list citrus and apple at the grape's cooler end, with stone fruit or tropical fruit in riper examples. They are careful to say that oak and time on the spent yeast can add toast, spice or a rounder feel, rather than promise it.

The current tech sheet for this Chardonnay is thorough where the grape guides above stay general: the 2024 release is 100 percent Chardonnay from the Carneros appellation, picked at night to protect its acidity, then fermented and aged completely in oak, nine months in American and French barrels, 37 percent of them new. Harvest ran August 28 through October 8, 2024, average sugar at picking was 24.0 Brix, and the finished wine lists 14.6 percent alcohol. The producer's tasting note reaches for yellow peach and ripe melon on the nose with bright citrus, continuing into creamy vanilla and buttery notes on the finish, crediting the grape's “signature bright acidity” for balancing that richness. Rombauer traces its own Chardonnay back to a first vintage in 1982, with Carneros bottlings specifically beginning in 1990.

Our call: a reasonable pick for a shopper who wants the producer's full account, a named appellation, a specific harvest window, and full-oak fermentation and aging all published on the tech sheet.
