Sandeman Fine Ruby Portugal Port Red Wine

The word Port on this bottle marks a place and a rulebook. Our region guide describes Port as a protected Portuguese designation for fortified wine made in the Douro Demarcated Region, which the mountains shelter from humid Atlantic winds, where winters run cold and summers hot and dry. The guide adds that the Port name on its own still spans several subregions, sweetness levels, colors and aging styles, so beyond marking a fortified wine from that region, the word Port does not settle the subregion, sweetness, color or aging style. The recorded name carries "Fine Ruby," though the grape or grapes inside are not something we can name.

Sandeman says it began in 1790 with George Sandeman, a young Scottish wine merchant then working in London, and the Port and Sherry business has belonged to the Portuguese company Sogrape since 2002.
