Sandeman says it was founded in 1790 by George Sandeman, a young Scottish wine merchant working in London, and the historic Port and Sherry house has been owned by Portuguese wine company Sogrape since 2002.

How grapes grow here
Mountains shelter the Douro from humid Atlantic winds. Winters can be cold and summers hot and dry, while rainfall generally falls as the region moves east toward Spain.
What lies under the vines
Much of the demarcated region has broken schist mixed with clay, with granite around some edges. Vineyard soils are often stony and low in organic matter.

- The institute reports that about 26,000 vineyard hectares are authorized for Port production.
Places within the region
- Baixo Corgo
- The western subregion has the greatest share of its land under vines and generally receives more rain than the eastern Douro.
- Cima Corgo and Douro Superior
- The central and eastern subregions become progressively drier, with Douro Superior reaching the Spanish border.
