What we make of this bottle
Santa Margherita says it was founded in 1935 by Count Gaetano Marzotto in northern Italy and that, from 1961, it pioneered a modern style of Pinot Grigio. Useful as that is, it is the house describing its own beginnings and its Pinot Grigio, not an account of the Tuscan red named here.
The words to read slowly are Chianti Classico. Our region guide treats Chianti and Chianti Classico as two separate protected Tuscan designations, not one name standing in as a shorter form of the other, with Classico occupying higher inland country between Florence and Siena. Both names, the guide says, point to Sangiovese-led wine, which is as near as anything here comes to naming the grape. The name ends in Riserva, a word the guide never pauses to define, and when we checked in September 2026 the price sat between $29.99 and $33.49 across six stores.
We do not have a shopper rating for this wine. So is the pull toward Sangiovese that the guide describes enough to go on, when neither the name nor that same guide ever says what the word Riserva adds?

Getting to know Chianti and Chianti Classico.
Both names point to Sangiovese-led Tuscan wine, but they have different boundaries and production rules. Reading the full label is the first step because the two names should not be collapsed into one legal category.
What the name means
Chianti DOCG and Chianti Classico DOCG are separate protected Tuscan designations. A bottle labeled Chianti Classico is not simply a smaller wording variant of Chianti.
How grapes grow here
The broad Chianti zone crosses central Tuscan hills, while Chianti Classico occupies higher inland country between Florence and Siena. Elevation, slope and exposure create local differences within both designations.
What lies under the vines
Clay and limestone are common, with sandstone, marl and stony ground varying by district. Neither designation reduces the whole area to one soil.
