What we make of this bottle
Price is the first thing that moves here: the same Cabernet carried a different figure at nearly every one of the stores we checked in August 2026. Behind that sits a producer with some years to it. Smith & Hook says it has spent more than 45 years making wine from namesake vineyards on former horse and cattle ranches near the California coast, and that it buys fruit from small growers around the Central Coast, among them Arroyo Seco, Paso Robles and San Benito.
The grape is Cabernet Sauvignon, which our grape research puts among reds grown in many regions, often firmly built and a frequent hand in blends. Regional authorities point to black currant, cherry and plum as common fruit references, with noticeable tannin and possible spice from oak, and they say ripeness, climate and winemaking can shape it lean and herbal in style or broad and fruit-led. We do not have a shopper rating for this wine. In our September 2026 checks the price ranged from $18.99 to $24.99.
