Kali Hart Chardonnay California White Wine

The name pairs Kali Hart with a grape and little else, so the maker is the part worth adding: Talbott says it belongs to the Gallo family of wineries, and that the vines at its Sleepy Hollow vineyard went in back in 1972.

Under that name is Chardonnay grown in California. Official category guides say the grape can stay lighter when it is made without oak, or gain more weight when it ferments and ages in oak. Oak and time on the spent yeast can bring toast, spice and a rounder feel. Those same guides link cool growing to citrus and apple and ripe growing to stone or tropical fruit. The oak effects are a choice the winery makes rather than a promise the grape keeps. If you want that settled before you reach the shelf, it is the question to ask an attendant. Kali Hart is not an invented brand name: the winery says it comes from the name of Talbott's founder's own daughter, and the Chardonnay draws its fruit from Monterey's coastal vineyards, where the winemaker credits "deep sand and gravelly soils" and a "dramatic maritime influence" with favoring cool-climate Chardonnay. For the current 2023 vintage, the producer's tasting notes describe sliced apple and white peach up front, toasted vanilla bean and nutmeg underneath, and a pineapple finish, calling the wine "supple" with a "juicy mouthfeel." The producer credits a cool 2023 spring and summer with extending hang time on the vine, which it says produced "exceptional phenolic ripeness with vibrant flavor characteristics." The winery also states its vineyards hold California Sustainable certification, using 100 percent recycled irrigation water and solar power offsets. What neither the Kali Hart microsite nor the parent Talbott site states is the alcohol percentage.

Our call: an easy choice for a shopper drawn to a named history and a named place; the winery ties the name to the founder's own daughter and roots the fruit in Monterey's coastal vineyards, with the current vintage's flavor profile and growing-season account both laid out in the producer's own words. Pass if you want the alcohol content confirmed before you buy, or a shopper rating to lean on; neither is published, and no rating has reached our record for this wine.
