And the price is the part that holds up to scrutiny here. In our September 2026 checks this California Chardonnay ranged from $10.49 to $15.99, among the least expensive whites we track. Sterling Vineyards says the winery was founded in Napa Valley in 1964, which describes the company, not this particular bottle.
What the name leaves open is how it was made. Official category guides describe Chardonnay as a grape oak can shape more than one way: without oak it can stay lighter, fermented and aged in oak it can gain more weight. The guides also mark citrus and apple as cool-end territory and stone or tropical fruit as ripe-end territory, and note that oak plus rest on the spent yeast can layer in toast, spice and a rounder texture, though it is a cellar choice rather than a promise. We do not have a shopper rating for this wine. So, at the shelf: is a bottle this inexpensive worth a try without a rating to go on?
