Waterbrook Chardonnay Washington White Wine

Waterbrook is a Washington Chardonnay, and the winery says it draws its grapes from the Walla Walla and Columbia valleys. It traces its start to 1984, when, by its account, its founders opened Walla Walla's fourth bonded winery. Regional research describes the Columbia Valley as a large recognized growing area east of the Cascade Range, reaching into Oregon but holding most of its vineyards on the Washington side, with smaller areas within it. That same research says the Cascades block much of the Pacific's rain, so the area runs dry under long summer daylight and growers lean on irrigation, while elevation, frost exposure and the day-to-night temperature swing shift from place to place.

Official category guides frame Chardonnay's fruit by climate, cooler meaning citrus and apple and riper meaning stone fruit or tropical fruit, so those are general Chardonnay possibilities rather than known flavors in this bottle. By our grape research the grape can be made without oak to stay lighter or fermented and aged in oak to gain more weight, and oak and time on the spent yeast can together add toast, spice and a rounder feel when a winemaker chooses it.
