What we make of this bottle
Chardonnay, the grape named on this bottle, is a white variety used for both still and sparkling wine, and here it comes from California. Wente Vineyards says its family winery was founded in Livermore Valley in 1883. We do not have a shopper rating for this wine.
By our grape research, oak is one lever: left out, the wine can stay lighter; used to ferment and age it, the wine can gain more weight. Official category guides add that time on the spent yeast can deepen a wine with toast, spice and a rounder texture, and they list citrus and apple with cooler bottles and stone fruit or tropical fruit with riper ones, a spread that describes the variety and not this one wine. In our September 2026 checks the price ranged from $18.99 to $24.99.
Wente's own account of its estate lists 3,000 acres of vineyards across two regions, Livermore Valley and Monterey County's Arroyo Seco, and it credits the morning fog in Livermore Valley as especially suited to Chardonnay. We were not able to confirm which of Wente's current Chardonnay bottlings corresponds to this listing: the shelf SKU carries the broad 'California' appellation, while Wente's current site lists its Chardonnays under more specific names and appellations (Wente Clone, Morning Fog, Riva Ranch and others), none labeled simply 'California.' We have not matched a technical sheet to this exact bottle and are not importing one on a guess.
Our call: reasonable if the Wente name and its family history in Livermore Valley since 1883 are enough of a reason to buy an inexpensive Chardonnay; that founding date comes from the producer itself and is long enough to mean something on a grocery shelf. Pass if you want the exact vineyard or technical sheet behind this specific bottle: we could not match one of Wente's current, more specifically labeled Chardonnays to this generic 'California' listing, and no shopper rating has reached our record either.
