There is a year in the name: 1883. It is not the vintage in the bottle. Wente Vineyards says 1883 is the year its family winery was founded in Livermore Valley, so the number reaches back to the winery's beginning rather than to any recent harvest.
As for the wine itself, our grape research says Cabernet Sauvignon often makes firmly built reds; regional authorities tie it to dark fruit such as currant and plum and to noticeable tannin, and it may show spice from oak. This one is labeled simply California.
