On this label, the word to work out first is Pinot Noir. It is a red grape with fairly thin skins, used for still reds and, in many traditional-method sparkling wines, as one of the main grapes.

Guides that categorize the grape point to flavors of red cherry, berry and plum, and to a paler color and lower tannin than you get from Cabernet Sauvignon. A to Z names its four founders as Oregon wine-industry veterans Deb Hatcher, Bill Hatcher, Sam Tannahill and Cheryl Francis, and says it has worked with more than 100 vineyards across the state. The current tasting sheet for this wine says the 2023 vintage blends fruit from more than fifteen of those vineyards, fermented separately and then blended into a single cuvee to match a classic Oregon Pinot Noir style. The sheet's own language calls out red fruit, strawberry, cranberry, raspberry and red cherry, deepening into plum, and describes 'moderate alcohol' with 'subdued tannins' and 'juicy acidity,' the producer's words; no numeric alcohol percentage is published anywhere on the site. The same sheet lists two outside critic scores for recent vintages, 90 points from Wine Enthusiast and 90 points from Wine & Spirits, plus four Wine & Spirits 'Best Buy' selections between 2016 and 2021, and the bottle carries Certified B Corporation and LIVE Certified Sustainable marks.
