The winemaker behind Arrow Creek is Juan Cerna, a Salinas Valley native with a degree in molecular and cellular biology from UC Santa Cruz, the brand's own page says; his winemaking career began in 1997 at Canandaigua Wine Company and continued at Monterey Wine Co., Bronco Wine Co. in Napa, ASV and Oak Ridge Winery before Arrow Creek, where the brand credits him with directing its organic wine production. The brand's product page for this bottle describes 'dark berry notes and spicy vanilla undertones... complemented by complex tannins,' the producer's words, naming blueberry, blackberry, cassis and toasted oak among the flavors, and calls the wine medium-full to full-bodied and dry. It suggests pairing the wine with a hamburger, steak tacos or a grilled ribeye, and names aged sharp cheddar as the page's own cheese pairing pick. The page gives no alcohol percentage and no vineyard detail beyond the California origin already on record.

Our call: worth a look if a named winemaker's real background is what you want behind an inexpensive Cabernet; Arrow Creek names Juan Cerna and traces his path through Canandaigua, Monterey Wine Co., Bronco and Oak Ridge before this bottle, more than the plain California label first suggests.
