In our checks this Chardonnay sold between $26.99 and $29.99, and the story on this one is the place name that follows the brand: Paso Robles, a federally recognized American Viticultural Area in San Luis Obispo County on California's Central Coast. The regional guide's first point about it is scale. This is a very large growing area rather than one uniform valley, with eleven named districts, and coastal openings, mountains, river plains and elevation giving those districts different growing conditions.
Marine air is one part of that variety. The guide credits the Templeton Gap and other openings in the Santa Lucia Range with pulling cool ocean air inland, a cooling that changes in strength from west to east. As for the grape, official category guides tie Chardonnay's flavors to ripeness: at the cooler end it runs to citrus and apple, and in riper examples to stone fruit or tropical fruit.
