The grape to work out on this bottle is Cabernet Sauvignon. Our grape research calls it a red grown across many regions, one that often turns out firmly built and shows up regularly in red blends. The origin given is Knights Valley, an AVA the producer has farmed since the mid-1960s and which earned its own federal recognition in 1983; Beringer's own account credits the area's volcanic soil, drained from the dormant volcano Mount Saint Helena, for the small, high-acid berries behind the wine's structure. On taste, the regional authorities behind that research reach for cherry, plum and black currant, with noticeable tannin and a possible touch of spice where oak is used; they note that ripeness, climate and winemaking can take a Cabernet from lean and herbal all the way to broad and richly fruited. Beringer's technical sheet for this wine lists 14.5 percent alcohol and describes an extended maceration to build color and tannin, followed by time in French oak barrels, 30 percent of them new, for 14 months, with malolactic fermentation adding further texture. The wine has drawn a 93-point score from the critic James Suckling, who called it “medium-bodied with plush tannins and balanced acidity.”
