What we make of this bottle
In Paso Robles the summer days run warm and dry before much cooler nights, as marine air slips inland through gaps in the Santa Lucia hills. The name Bezel does not say who stands behind it. Bezel says its website and brand are owned and controlled by Cakebread Cellars.
The grape is Cabernet Sauvignon, which regional authorities describe as a red grape that often makes firmly built wines and is a common part of blends. Those authorities name black currant, cherry and plum as the grape's usual fruit notes, with noticeable tannin and possible oak spice, though ripeness, climate and winemaking can leave the wine lean and herbal in style or broad and fruit-led. The stores we checked in September 2026 listed it between $30.99 and $35.99. We do not have a shopper rating for this wine.
Paso Robles itself is no single valley but a federally recognized growing area in San Luis Obispo County, on California's Central Coast, split into eleven named districts.
Bezel's own account gets specific about this bottling. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Petit Sirah, aged 14 months in French oak, 26 percent of it new, and the finished wine lists 14.2 percent alcohol. Winemaker Jane Dunkley says the fruit comes from two sites at opposite ends of the Paso Robles appellation, “so we can combine the best of both: great tannin structure and acidity, as well as plush, generous fruit with a classic herbal edge.” The producer's tasting notes describe “bold blackcurrant aromas” with bay leaf, blackberry and raspberry jam, plus “a bit of toasty oak on the long finish.”
Our call: buy it on the producer's own detail; Bezel names the exact blend, the oak program, and a winemaker who names the two vineyard sites and explains why she blends them. Pass if you want a shopper's confirmation before you spend; no rating has reached our record, so the producer's account is carrying the whole case.

How grapes grow here
Warm, dry summer days are followed by much cooler nights. The Templeton Gap and other openings in the Santa Lucia Range pull marine air inland, with the strength of that cooling changing from west to east.

More than 30 soil series occur in the AVA. Calcareous shale and other marine sedimentary rocks are important, alongside granite-derived, volcanic, sandy, loamy and clay-rich ground.
