What we make of this bottle
Robert Hall says the winery he founded in Paso Robles in 1999 sits on a 173 acre estate that includes an underground cave for aging wine. The grape here is Cabernet Sauvignon, which our grape research describes as a firmly built red grown in many regions and often folded into blends. Regional authorities point to black currant, cherry and plum as its common fruit notes, with noticeable tannin and possible spice from oak, and they add that ripeness, climate and winemaking can shape a Cabernet into something lean and herbal in style or broad and fruit-led.
Days in Paso Robles run warm and dry on California's Central Coast before the temperature falls off sharply at night, when ocean air pushes inland through openings in the Santa Lucia hills. In our September 2026 checks it was priced between $17.99 and $21.99 across the three stores we looked at. We do not have a shopper rating for this wine. Paso Robles is a very large appellation, not one uniform valley. Coastal openings, mountains, river plains and elevation create different growing conditions across its districts.
What the name means
Paso Robles is a federally recognized American Viticultural Area in San Luis Obispo County on California's Central Coast. Eleven named districts divide the larger AVA.
How grapes grow here
Warm, dry summer days are followed by much cooler nights. The Templeton Gap and other openings in the Santa Lucia Range pull marine air inland, with the strength of that cooling changing from west to east.
What lies under the vines
More than 30 soil series occur in the AVA. Calcareous shale and other marine sedimentary rocks are important, alongside granite-derived, volcanic, sandy, loamy and clay-rich ground.
