Our take

What we make of this bottle

In our September 2026 checks the lowest observed price was $42.99, and the name goes back a long way: Bollinger says its Champagne house was founded in 1829 in Aÿ, France, by Athanase de Villermont, Paul Renaudin and Jacques Bollinger. We do not have a shopper rating for this bottle.

Champagne is a protected French name. Regional guides explain that the name applies to wine made inside a growing area that French law fixed in 1927, so a bottle labeled Champagne came from that one part of France and nowhere else. Those guides also note that the region sits near the cold northern edge of where wine grapes will ripen, where cool weather helps the grapes hold their acidity. Champagne is usually blended across different grapes, vineyard plots, and even years.

Prices differed by store: in our September 2026 checks the highest we saw was $125.99. So the real choice comes down to this: do you want Champagne from the one place allowed to use the name, or will another sparkling wine do?

Region guideChampagne

A little background helps this bottle make sense.

Getting to know Champagne.

Champagne is one appellation with many small vineyard plots and several distinct growing areas. Blending across grapes, places and years is common, so the producer and bottle still supply important detail.

The place

What the name means

Champagne is a protected French appellation whose production area was set by law in 1927. The name applies to wine made within that defined area under its rules.

Weather

How grapes grow here

Oceanic and continental influences meet near the northern edge of reliable grape growing. Moderate rain and cool conditions help retain acidity, while frost and storms remain regular risks.

Soil

What lies under the vines

The subsoil is mainly limestone, including chalk, marl and harder limestone, with some sand and clay. Chalk can drain freely while holding water in its pores for dry periods.
