Edmeades Mendocino County Zinfandel Red Wine

What makes Zinfandel taste different from one bottle to the next? Zinfandel is a red grape with a long history in California, and depending on the winemaking it can end up as a red wine, as the pink wine sold as White Zinfandel, or as part of a blend. The grape stays the same across those forms.

Regional authorities link the grape to ripe berry and plum flavors with a hint of spice, and to fuller body as grapes reach higher ripeness. Vineyard age, harvest timing and alcohol can all push the result in different directions, the same authorities add. We do not have a shopper rating for this bottle.

By Edmeades's own account, its history began in 1963, when Dr. Donald Edmeades planted grapes in Philo, in Mendocino County's Anderson Valley; the winery has been part of Jackson Family Wines since 1988. This wine's name also carries Mendocino County.

In our September 2026 checks, this wine's price came to $19.99, a single figure rather than a range. The median among the 483 rated wines here is 4.71; this bottle does not have a rating yet.

Edmeades's own product page lists this wine at $20 for the current 750 ml release, a separate, dated figure from our own August 2026 store checks, and adds a critic's score to the record: the current release earned 90 points from Wine Enthusiast in April 2024. The producer describes its house style as “bold, intense Zinfandels of distinctive character and personality,” made, it says, with “a delicate touch in our cellar, allowing each vineyard to be fully expressed.” The family thread runs further than the 1963 planting: Dr. Edmeades's son Deron started Edmeades Winery itself in 1972, and Dave Ready has served as chief winemaker since 2017, continuing what the producer calls Mendocino's tradition of mountain Zinfandel.

Our call: worth buying on the producer's account if a mountain-Zinfandel pedigree and a fresh critic score are what you look for; Edmeades ties this bottle to a Mendocino Zinfandel tradition running from a 1963 planting through a 90-point score from Wine Enthusiast in April 2024.
