What we make of this bottle
Zinfandel has grown in California for a long time, and this is a California Zinfandel carrying the Freakshow name. That name is louder than anything we can yet confirm about who makes it: a producer account for this bottle is not something we have pinned down. The grape and the origin are solid; the maker is still an open question.
Regional authorities describe Zinfandel as giving ripe berry and plum fruit with a note of spice, and a fuller body when the grapes are picked riper. They add that vineyard age, the timing of the harvest, and the alcohol level can shift the result quite a bit. So the grape name points to a broad style, not one guaranteed taste.
