What we make of this bottle
What does "Washington" really tell you about a red wine? Less than the wide address suggests. Official regional guides treat the state as a broad origin rather than a single growing area, counting 21 federally recognized winegrowing zones inside its borders, a few of them straddling the Oregon line, so the same word can sit on fruit from one narrow district or on a blend drawn from across the state. Which grape or grapes fill this red is not something we can confirm. Our September 2026 checks found it priced from $14.99 to $21.99.
Those guides add that most Washington vines grow inland, past the Cascade Range, where the mountains block much of the Pacific rain and leave generally dry conditions, warm days and cool nights, with winter frost a real risk; sites closer to the coast feel more of the ocean. We do not have a shopper rating for this wine. Joel Gott Wines dates the company to 1996.

Getting to know Washington State.
A Washington label can point to a large state blend or to a narrower AVA. Most vineyards are east of the Cascade Range, but the exact AVA still matters because elevation, wind, rain and frost exposure change across the state.

Washington is a state origin, not one American Viticultural Area. Its wine regions include 21 federally recognized AVAs, some shared with Oregon.
How grapes grow here
The Cascade Range blocks much of the Pacific rain from eastern Washington. That creates generally dry growing conditions with warm summer days, cool nights and winter frost risk, while western sites have stronger marine influence.
What lies under the vines
Flood deposits, windblown silt, sand, gravel and volcanic material occur across Washington wine country. A state name alone does not identify one soil or vineyard setting.
