What we make of this bottle
The wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon from California. Markham Vineyards says Bruce Markham founded the winery in 1977, which marks the company's beginning rather than anything about this particular bottling.
We do not have a shopper rating for this wine, so the grape carries the description. Cabernet Sauvignon, in our grape research, is a red grape planted widely and known for firmly built wines; it often shows up as a blending partner as well. On flavor, regional authorities point to black currant, cherry, and plum, plus noticeable tannin and possible spice from oak, and they caution that ripeness, climate, and winemaking can send a Cabernet in either direction, lean and herbal in style or broad and fruit-led.
The stated origin is simply California, with no smaller place named, and at the stores we checked in September 2026 the price ranged from $54.99 to $68.99.
Markham's own site names two estate vineyards behind its Cabernet Sauvignon: Yountville Ranch, a 78-acre site on the Rutherford Bench that Bruce Markham bought in 1975, two years before he founded the winery, and Rockerbox, a 60-acre parcel in the Calistoga district that the producer says runs about ten degrees warmer than southern Napa before evening fog cools the vines. The brand's history page adds that Markham farms 260 acres of estate vineyards sustainably across the valley. One caveat worth stating plainly: the Cabernet Sauvignon currently listed on Markham's site carries its own Napa Valley appellation and a full technical sheet, 94 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, aged 17 months in French oak. Our own retail record for this bottle names only California with no smaller place stated, so we cannot confirm the two are the same wine, and we are not importing the Napa Valley sheet's specific numbers as fact for this bottle.
Our call: this suits a shopper buying on Napa Valley provenance and named vineyard sourcing; Markham states real specifics about its estate vineyards and its 1977 founding, even though our record cannot confirm this bottle matches the producer's currently listed Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon exactly. Pass if that appellation gap or a shopper rating matters to your choice; neither is settled here, and the California-only listing leaves a real difference between our record and the producer's site.
