What we make of this bottle
Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio name the same white grape, and grape guides say the wording on a label is often a style signal, Gris pointing toward more body and Grigio toward something lighter and crisper. This bottle uses Gris. The Willamette Valley on the label is Oregon's best-known growing region, a stretch of more than a hundred miles between the Coast Range and the Cascades, recognized as its own federal growing area since 1983 and now home to eleven smaller AVAs within its boundary.
Pike Road's own account names the Campbell family, owners of Elk Cove Vineyards, as the people behind the winery, saying they launched Pike Road in 2016 to make affordable, quality wine from Willamette Valley fruit, with Adam Campbell as owner and winemaker. A separate page on the same site, though, profiles the winemaking through a different person: a winemaker named Heather, who trained at the University of Adelaide in Australia and has made wine across Australia, New Zealand and Oregon. The site does not reconcile the two names. For the Pinot Gris specifically, Pike Road names Matteri Vineyard, in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, as a source, describing a “mineral-driven expression of the variety sourced from marine sediment soils.”
Two outside critics have weighed in on the 2023 vintage, both quoted on Pike Road's own site. Decanter's Clive Pursehouse gave it 91 points, calling it a wine that “really over delivers” for a value-priced Pinot Gris, “a melange of estate and purchased fruit from throughout the Willamette Valley” with aromatics of “ginger, white flowers, and salty sea air” and a finish of “savoury tarragon.” Wine Enthusiast's Michael Alberty also scored it 91 points and named it a Best Buy, describing “lemon curd and saline flavors backlit by refreshingly crisp acidity.” Pike Road does not publish an alcohol percentage or other tech-sheet figures for the wine. We do not have a shopper rating for this bottle. In our August 2026 checks its regular price was $14.99.
Our call: this suits a shopper drawn to two independent 91-point scores, from Decanter and Wine Enthusiast, plus a named source vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, all stated on the producer's own pages. Pass if you want a stated alcohol percentage or a clear, consistent account of who is making the wine; Pike Road publishes neither, naming Adam Campbell as owner and winemaker in one place and a different winemaker, Heather, in another, and no shopper rating is on record yet.

Getting to know Willamette Valley.
The Willamette Valley runs for more than 100 miles and contains many hillside settings. The AVA establishes origin, but a nested AVA or vineyard gives a closer reading of soil, elevation and wind.
What the name means
Willamette Valley has been a federally recognized American Viticultural Area since 1983. Eleven smaller AVAs now sit within the larger valley boundary.
How grapes grow here
The Coast Range limits direct Pacific influence and the Cascades separate the valley from drier central Oregon. The region has a cool growing climate, but hills, gaps and distance north or south create local differences.
What lies under the vines
Marine sedimentary, volcanic basalt and windblown loess are the three major hillside soil groups identified by the regional association. Valley-floor alluvium adds another setting within the broad AVA.

Getting to know Pinot Gris.
Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are two names for the same white grape. The label wording often signals a style choice, but it does not create a different grape.
