Alexander Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

On the label those two words, Cabernet Sauvignon, name a grape and stop short of promising a flavor. Guides on the variety call it a red grown across many regions, one that tends to build a firm wine. They reach for black currant, cherry and plum as the usual fruit comparisons, note a real grip of tannin, and add a hint of spice where oak has been used. The same guides are plain that ripeness, climate and the choices in the cellar can push a Cabernet toward the lean, herbal side or toward something broad and full of ripe fruit.

The other half of the name points to a place. In northern Sonoma County, Alexander Valley traces the Russian River and its neighboring benchlands across some twenty miles, and it is recognized as its own federal wine district, a name more exact than Sonoma County or California by themselves. Regional guides describe warm, dry summers there, with cooler Pacific air drawn inland along the river, though how much of that cool reaches any given vineyard depends on its height, the way its slope faces the sun and its distance from the water.
